A man identified as Bona Urahi, has been sentenced to seven strokes of the cane and also to clean the premises of the Gudu Upper Area Court in Abuja, for stealing sugarcane.
Urahi was said to have entered the farm of one Joseph Christian on the 19th of July, 2015, trying to make away with some sticks of sugarcane which he had cut without permission from the owner. Urahi, who resides at Oroaga Street, Garki 2, Abuja, was dragged to the court after Christian reported the case to the police. During the court proceedings which were presided over by Alhaji Umar Kagarko, it was revealed that, it is the second time the accused had stolen sugar cane from Christian’s farm.
Urahi pleaded guilty, saying his action was as a result of hunger. Just recently, Kareem Adeyemi was sentenced to jail by an Iyaganku chief magistrates’ court in Ibadan, Oyo state for stealing in a mosque.
