Gwarzo Secondary School for Boys in Kano (HIGSSB) has been shut down by
the Kano State Government over allegation of homosexual relationships
between students of the school.
Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, deputy governor
(and acting governor) as Kano disclosed this information while
inaugurating a 14-man panel in Kano on Friday, October 30, 2015 to probe
the allegations. Prof. Abubakar Mustapha, a former vice chancellor the
University of Maiduguri was named chairman of the panel.
Mustapha and the committee have been
mandated to conduct a comprehensive investigation on the allegation of
homosexual relationships and gay sex among students of HIGSSB, to
identify victims of the alleged sex crimes, and determine the extent of
abuse among the student population.
The committee is also mandated to
identify the “culprits” of the alleged acts of sodomy and determine the
extent of their crimes. The state government also directed the committee
to investigate the school management on the issue.
This information was contained in a
statement signed by Usman Bello, director of Press of the acting
governor of Kano, and made available to the press. The panel was also
directed to recommend sanctions for those found culpable in this
scandal and to submit its report in two weeks.
